Position Summary:  

The Prevention Specialists serve on the SARA Prevention Team. Each Prevention Specialist is a collaborative team partner in the development, delivery, and evaluation of the agency’s prevention programs (listed below). 

  1. Green Dot  
  2. An active bystander training program designed for high school/middle schools that provide training, support, and resources to students, faculty and administration. 
  3. Coaching Boys into Men 
  4. A training program for coaches that prepares them to have meaningful, impactful conversations with their teams about healthy relationships and building a safe, inclusive team culture.  
  5. Restaurant Support 
  6. On The Fly – trains service industry staff to identify and respond to harmful situations quickly and efficiently.  
  7. Leadership Committee  
  8. Technical Assistance 
  9. Policy Support  
  10. Listening & Referrals  
  11. P.A.C.C.C. Men  
  12. Preventing Abuse and Cultivating Culture Change 
  13. A cohort of men in the Charlottesville community that meet monthly to learn, discuss, and implement their own initiative in their circle to create safe, inclusive, environments and market resources to community members. 
  14. Additional programs and community projects may include:  
  15. Safe Church  
  16. Parent Council  
  17. Fatherhood Groups  
  18. Community training and listening sessions 

 

The Prevention Team:  

The SARA Prevention Team includes 3 full-time Prevention Specialists who are supported by the Director of Prevention. This team supports several year-round primary prevention programs that focus on emotional literacy, equity, and fostering healthy social norms for violence prevention. The Prevention Team is committed to understanding and supporting the impacts of intersectional lived experiences and systemic inequity on individuals and communities. We are dedicated to listening, learning, and supporting our community partners and clients through a trauma-informed lens to best meet their current needs, and support their process for creating safe, inclusive environments.  

 

A best-fit candidate: 

  • Knowledge related to key risk and protective factors for the primary prevention of sexual violence, especially regarding social norms around consent, bystander intervention, and sexual harassment 
  • Knowledge related to the SARA service area, the impacts of intersectional lived experiences, and systemic inequity on individuals and communities 
  • Experience with program design or event planning (demonstrates organizational skills, coordinating with external partners, and executing short-term and long-term planning for program facilitation) 
  • Experience connecting, collaborating, and fostering strong relationships with community members 
  • Ability to conduct research, identify needs, and evaluate programs 
  • Demonstrates a trauma-informed approach to all aspects of work 
  • Experience leading groups in training, programming, and/or presentations 
  • Solution-oriented approach and attitude 
  • Willingness to work cooperatively with different personalities and individuals of diverse racial, economic, and cultural backgrounds 
  • Committed to learning, listening, and leading impactful culture change in the community to promote positive behavior change and prevent sexual violence 

 

Other Duties/Responsibilities:  

  • Prepare reports, including grant reports, in partnership with the Director of Prevention.  
  • Document direct service and outreach activities in VAdata, and Prevention Reporting.  
  • Attend SARA Crisis Services training and support on-call coverage monthly 
  • Green Dot Training certification – all Prevention Specialists will be certified to lead Green Dot Trainings.  
  • Participate in staff meetings, agency committees, and learning opportunities to expend knowledge and best practices  
  • Collaborate with agency teams to provide best services to clients, partners, and outreach efforts 
  • Complete other duties as requested by the Director of Prevention or Executive Director 

 

* This position will have occasional evening and weekend hours. Employees will need to have access to transportation to meet with community partners. Employees are required to submit to a criminal and child abuse background check.
