EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Herring Gut Coastal Science Center located in scenic Port Clyde, Maine is a unique organization with educational programs tailored to reach a wide range of audiences. Our expanded programming satisfies the curiosity of Pre-K children all the way up through adults.
Our marine and environmental science-based hands-on experiences will connect visitors and year-round residents to the coast and the connections to inland waters, expand your knowledge of aquaponics, aquaculture, and the ocean, and leave you with a sense of wonder.

Reporting to the Herring Gut Coastal Science Center’s Board of Directors (BOD), the Executive Director (ED) has overall strategic and operational responsibility for all development/advancement functions, professional staff, facilities and volunteers. Other key duties include marketing and local, regional and national outreach for the expansion and execution of the organization’s mission.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization as a primary responsibility.
- Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues necessary to support HGCSC‘s mission.
- Responsible for the fiscal integrity of HGCSC to include submission to the BOD a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements.
- Responsible for fiscal management of operating within the approved budget, including maximum resource utilization.
Organizational Mission and Strategy: Collaborates with BOD and staff to ensure the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community and national outreach.
- Responsible for the implementation of all HGCSC’s programs designed to carry out the organization’s mission.
- Responsible for implementation and reporting on milestones of strategic planning to ensure that HGCSC can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.
- Responsible for the enhancement of HGCSC’s image by being active and visible with other professional, civic, private organizations and within the local community.
Board Communication: The ED works with the Board of Directors in order to fulfill the organization's mission and vision.
- Responsible for leading Herring Gut Coastal Science Center in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
- Responsible for communicating effectively with the BOD and providing, in a timely and accurate manner all information necessary for the BOD to function properly and to make informed decisions.
Organizational Operations: Ensures that all operations of the organization are tended to in a highly professional and responsible manner.
- Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.
- Responsible for providing effective administration of HGSC’s operations.
- Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into on behalf of the organization.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reports to and works closely with the BOD in regard to policy decisions, fundraising, and increasing the overall visibility of the organization.
- Supervise and collaborate with the organization’s staff.
- Strategic planning and implementation.
- Planning and execution of the annual budget.
- Serve as HGCSC’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.
- Establish and maintain relations with various organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance HGCSC’s mission.
- Engage in fundraising and developing other revenues sources inclusive of grants.
- Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.
- Oversee organization Board and committee meetings.
- Utilizing and improving employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of HGCSC.
- Review and approve contracts for services.
- Other duties as assigned by the BOD.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED
- Successful fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community related to the work of the organization.
- A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.
- Five or more years senior nonprofit management experience or equivalent at regional and/or national scale.
- High integrity leadership.
- Experience and skill in working with a BOD and cultivating new Board members.
- High level strategic thinking and Planning.
- A demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
- Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders and partner agencies.
- Solid organizational abilities, including planning, systematic program development, implementation and evaluation.
- Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong public speaking ability which includes ability to convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers, donors and the communities of Maine.
- Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
- Experience with Marine ecosystems and industries is a plus.
- Advanced degree or certification in nonprofit management is a plus.
Compensation: $75,000 - $85,000 depending on experience, plus benefits.
