Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento provides Sacramento and Yolo County individuals and families with a springboard to secure, stable futures through affordable homeownership, home repairs, and neighborhood revitalization. In 2021, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento impacted over 10,000 people through home build, repair, and community projects.

Your Impact:

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a key partner to the CEO and Board of Directors and is responsible for the comprehensive planning, implementation, management, and oversite of all fundraising, communications, volunteer management, and community relations activities. The CDO works with the CEO to build the revenue strategy for the year, leads and supports a team of fundraising professionals to raise the annual fundraising goal, and supports an organization-wide culture of philanthropy, providing visionary leadership while ensuring the execution of highly robust development department strategy.  The CDO will bring solid capital campaign and major gifts experience, a proven track record building a team of professional fundraisers, and have the maturity and gravitas to interact with business, political, and nonprofit leaders.   As the major revenue driver for the organization, the Chief Development Officer will manage the fund development department, maintain close connections with stakeholders, and ensure over $5 million is raised annually to support the growth of Habitat’s programs and impact.

The CDO must be an energetic and inspiring leader with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.  A strong work ethic combined with honesty and integrity are absolute requirements, as is a dedication to the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento.  The successful candidate will be flexible and adaptable to situational changes.  This position is an integral member of the executive leadership team; executing fundraising and managing a highly collegial, collaborative, mission-driven environment guided by intelligent development planning, metrics, and direction.

Primary Responsibilities:
Fundraising

Serve as the lead strategist, designing and implementing organizational-wide development activities that advance the mission of Habitat.
Manage fund development processes and those handling those processes. These include budgeting, planning, prospect identification, marketing, solicitation,
Serve as lead fundraiser and partner closely with CEO and Board to implement the next five years of the strategic planning campaign.
Lead the expansion of the planned giving program to meet or exceed short and long-term fundraising goal. Develop strategic objectives and annual goals for planned giving.
Provide monthly analysis of progress toward annual fundraising goals to the Board and Leadership Team.
Create, cultivate, and maintain select important relationships with high target donors, including identification, strategy development, solicitation, data tracking, and stewardship.
Continually research and bring forward strategies to diversify funding.
Verify compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors, and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.
Manage and cultivate existing relationships to expand programmatic opportunities and revenue streams.

Communications/Public Relations

Work closely with the CEO and Leadership Team to create integrated, strategic plans and corresponding goals for Communications and External Relations reflecting the larger strategic goals of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento.
Provide leadership and supervision to communications team members and ensure that fundraising and promotional strategies are consistent with Habitat’s organizational branding, values, and communication objectives.
Develop strong and effective partnerships with media (paid and pro-bono), corporate and nonprofit partner professionals and others to enhance Habitat’s marketing, promotional efforts, and high visibility presence across the region. Along with CEO, serves as media spokesperson or external ambassador with key constituents.
Publicly represent Habitat for Humanity Greater Sacramento at high-level, high-impact meetings, conferences, and with external constituency groups, including community, government, and private organizations, building excitement for its funding/mission expansion.
Participate and attend community, statewide, and national events to establish strategic relationships for potential funding.
Create and issue press releases, social media posts, and other communications using the voice of Habitat, adhering to established brand guidelines.

Staff Development and Leadership

Lead teams with operational efficiency and effectiveness that is demonstrated by quantitative metrics and accountability.
Oversee affiliate communications, social media posts, and print materials. The Fund Development department creates outgoing print and digital collateral for all departments with oversite from the CDO.
Direct organizational efforts to develop effective and best-in-class giving programs, including sponsorship, direct marketing, planned giving, major gifts, donor acquisition, foundations, corporations, special events, donor recognition, and acknowledgement.
Provide leadership and vision for the Fund Development department by setting goals and objectives that are challenging and consistent with organizational targets.
Exemplify leadership within the organization by contributing professional expertise as an active member of the leadership team.
Mentor, coach, and develop staff using a positive, supportive, and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities; and monitor and evaluate performance and development results.
Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
With volunteer services team members, develop and implement clear program objectives and expectations of volunteer-related programs and sponsorships.

Work Experience Requirements:

A true passion for Habitat for Humanity Greater Sacramento’s mission, and strategic capacity to grow funding pathways and drive awareness for Habitat Homeownership and Neighborhood Revitalization programs
Over 10 years of successful and quantifiable fundraising experience. Demonstrated ability to provide oversight, leadership, and direction, with at least four years of significant supervisory experience including creating and managing budget development, managing a comprehensive development program, large event planning, administration, and staff management.
Experience leading successful, comprehensive, and strategic fundraising or related programs.
Experience leading strategic advancement programs, including donor acquisition, sponsorship, planned giving, major gifts, direct mail, and grant writing.
Experience working with foundation and corporate partners, including identifying prospects, cultivating and stewarding relationships, and overseeing the strategic development of proposals.
Proven experience successfully soliciting 5-7 figure gifts.
Knowledge of regional donors a plus.
Knowledge of communications planning, social media, and public relations.
Bachelor’s degree; preferred emphasis in fundraising, marketing, public relations, English, or business.
Software: CRMs, Microsoft Office, Raiser’s Edge, Adobe Creative Suite.
Comfort with interacting and engaging a diverse set of stakeholders with respect and sensitivity, including senior executives, staff, volunteers, all types of donors, and vendors.

Licenses, Certificates, Other Skills: Preferred candidates will have a valid California driver's license and meet our organization’s automobile insurability requirement. Selected certifications may be required (CPR certification, etc.) at the organization’s expense.

Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. Employee may occasionally be asked to work in the ReStore or at Construction build sites for special events, Board functions, or for training meetings.

Work Hours: In general, Monday – Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. Position is exempt; additional evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Requirements: Candidate should have the ability to sit comfortably for prolonged periods of time. Position will also include occasional standing, lifting items up to 40 pounds, walking, and bending/squatting. This position requires outreach in the community, including visiting active construction sites. This position will occasionally be engaged in community build or improvement projects, such as community clean-ups, serving outside in various types of weather.
