Berkeley Food Network (“BFN”) is seeking a seasoned Development & Communications Manager who can use their years of fundraising expertise to help Berkeley Food Network meet our clients’ needs and deliver our hunger relief programs. The Development & Communications Manager shares the story of BFN’s work in the Berkeley and Albany communities and raises awareness about the almost 7,000 neighbors we touch every week, all with the goal of building a larger base of volunteer and financial support for our mission. Who We Are
Berkeley Food Network seeks to end hunger and poor nutrition by using innovative, community-centered solutions to build a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable food system. With an emphasis on fresh produce, BFN’s programs improve access to healthy foods for residents of low-income neighborhoods throughout our service area. In 2021, the BFN team distributed almost 2 million pounds of food to over 6,000 clients every week!
What You’ll Do
The Development & Communications Manager is responsible for the formulation and implementation of all of BFN’s development/fundraising, marketing, communications, public relations, and outreach activities. Reporting to the Executive Director and working collaboratively with the Board of Directors and the Business Operations Manager, this role oversees the fundraising activities including the individual and institutional giving programs and the communication and marketing functions. Duties include identifying new potential donors, cultivating relationships with our existing supporters, organizing initiatives to solicit funding, developing major gift opportunities, and producing communications to varied audiences to build a base of support for all of BFN’s mission.
What You’ll Bring to BFN
At least five (5) years’ experience in development/fundraising position(s) focused on cultivating donor relationships for nonprofit organizations with over $2M in operating expenses/revenues. Educational or professional attainment in sales or marketing may be substituted for years of experience.
At least two (2) years’ experience in communications or marketing;
At least two (2) years’ fundraising experience from major gift donors, foundation, corporate and government supporters;
Proven track record of securing individual gifts of up to $10k and securing campaign gifts from institutional donors over $10k;
Year over year proven experience in meeting or exceeding fundraising revenue goals;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact professionally and respectfully with donors, community partners, board members, potential corporate donors, volunteers, and staff;
Ability to change voice and communication style to fit a particular audience/purpose;
Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Office, Google Workspace Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, MailChimp, SalesForce, social media platforms, and digital photography formats;
Intermediate to advanced experience with customer relationship management (CRM) platforms such as SalesForce, Raiser’s Edge, and Blackbaud;
Experience with email marketing programs;
Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and ability to self-manage deadlines;
Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities and projects;
Ability to occasionally attend functions/activities outside normal hours;
Valid California driver’s license with insurable driving record. Vehicle ownership not required.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous leadership experience in a client-facing nonprofit organization;
Moderate to extensive knowledge of food systems, public health issues, and the inequities in institutional structures contributing to hunger and poverty in the greater Berkeley community;
Food operations or food bank experience a plus.

Physical Requirements
This position is located in equal parts in an office environment and the warehouse floor. This job requires the ability to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:
Sit at a desk, conference room or workstation for more than three (3) hours at a time;
Ability to operate a computer and keyboard for the entirety of a scheduled work shift;
Traverse the distance of the facility in performance of duties;
Access transportation and ability to travel to local, state, and national events or meetings with external stakeholders;
Communicate in clear speaking voice in person, before large audiences and over audio or video-based communications applications (e.g. phone, Zoom);
Able to occasionally lift 25 pounds with assistance;
Ability to comply with BFN’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy and current COVID-19 safety requirements including the following:
Ability to provide proof of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination series as recommended by CDC
Ability to wear and maintain a face mask for the duration of the scheduled shift
Compensation & Benefits
This is an onsite full-time, exempt position working 40 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays, 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m. The starting salary for this position is $79,270 annualized. In addition, BFN offers a competitive benefit package including:
