POSITION SUMMARY: Certified lifeguards are key to the safety of campers and staff during aquatic activities at camp. In addition to being cabin counselors, Aquatics Program Counselors work shifts at the pool and the waterfront making sure campers and staff are following the rules so they can have a safe and enjoyable water experience.


BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

  • Live in a cabin with a co-counselor and 8 campers, and provide active supervision and attention to the physical and emotional wellbeing of campers during all on-duty hours.
  • Communicate and enforce all aquatics policies and procedures with staff and campers at the pool and waterfront.
  • Actively guard and scan the water during aquatic activities, refraining from socialization while on duty.
  • Step in as a substitute to lead aquatics programs, such as Boating and Swim Instruction.
  • Communicate with co-counselor and supervisor appropriately to balance responsibilities as a lifeguard with responsibilities as a cabin counselor. 
  • Actively participate in camp programming outside of aquatic activities including evening activities, camper choice time, bus duty, and more.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • This position is compensated at a rate of $650 per week plus a $50 weekly bonus for valid lifeguard certification during weeks worked, pre-tax.
  • Our summer seasonal staff are paid on a bi-weekly basis and are classified as exempt, seasonal employees.
  • Position requires a lifeguard certification. PEAK can provide training prior to employment.

REQUIREMENTS & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Must be able to reside on the LVC resident camp property in Boscobel, WI starting with two weeks of staff training in June and ending after the last camp program lets out in mid-August.
  • Proficient swimmer.
  • Current Lifeguard Certification (PEAK can provide training prior to employment)
  • Must be at least 18 and/or have a high school diploma or GED to apply.


REPORTING AND RELATIONSHIPS

  • Aquatics Program Counselors will report to the Aquatics Coordinator with direction from Assistant Director of Programs & Expeditions


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Lifeguard certification requires that you perform physical tests including, but not limited to: continuous 300 yard swim, treading water for 2 minutes, timed retrieval of a ten-pound object from the bottom of the pool, and various rescue maneuvers. 
  • The pool at LVC is an outdoor facility and the camp environment is often hot or rainy. You must be able to work outside for sustained periods of time without air conditioning. 
  • Position requires standing, stooping, sitting, walking long distances in hilly terrain, and occasionally lifting up to 40 pounds with or without assistance. 
  • Position requires working weekends and nights, with time off in between camp sessions. Camp days are often long and at times require late night camper support. Staff will have daily scheduled breaks.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations, including the ability to enter and exit the pool quickly and potentially assist or lift distressed swimmers of varying weights and heights. 
  • Occasional exposure to pool chemicals, using appropriate personal protective equipment.
