Job Description

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking a Director of Development and Grants. We are looking for an experienced fundraising professional with significant experience in grant writing. The individual must be committed to IEEFA's mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable and profitable energy economy and be willing to invest in learning how IEEFA’s energy finance research and communication strategies support this mission around the world. This is a hybrid remote/in-person position, including some in-office work in our Lakewood, Ohio office. Candidates who live in the Greater Cleveland area are preferred.

IEEFA’s $12M annual budget is 99% funded through grants from over 30 public, private, and family foundations, including a significant portion of multi-year and general support grants. Our funding is highly relationship-driven. While most of our funding comes from US-based funders, we also receive support from foundations in Europe, Asia, and Australia.

IEEFA is a rapidly-growing not-for-profit organization that conducts research and analysis on financial and economic issues related to energy markets, trends and policies. Headquartered in the United States, IEEFA has a team of analysts and communications personnel located in 15 countries across the globe.  IEEFA produces a significant volume of original research, as well as ongoing analysis and reports on issues affecting energy industries. Director of Development and Grants

Roles and Responsibilities

Grant Writing (approximately 75% of time)

Serves as the primary writer of grant proposals and reports Ensures that all proposals and reports are well-written, correct, on-time and include the necessary budgetary, financial and organizational information.
Assesses grant compatibility, in partnership with program and finance teams, to ensure outcome metrics align with IEEFA’s mission and objectives; Assesses compliance with grant stipulations and ensures grants are implemented according to the operational and financial needs of the organization


Cultivates relationships and communicates with program staff regularly to understand organizational mission, priorities and impact


Maintains knowledge of requirements, practices, and procedures for soliciting, writing, receiving, reviewing, and processing proposals, and administering grants and agreements
Develops and leads the overall grant management policies and procedures in accordance with industry best practices; evaluates and improves the grants production process to improve efficiency; strengthens organizational efficiency by improving and tracking grant material processes: proposals, contracts, and funder requirements

Additional Development Activities (approximately 25% of time)

Directs and oversees all facets of the fundraising program at IEEFA, in consultation with the Executive Director and the Director of Finance and Administration
Supervises one Grants Manager position including reviewing, editing, and providing feedback on their applications and reports, and providing guidance in managing grants portfolio in a timely and efficient manner


Ensures that current funders are appropriately stewarded, and leads a strategy to identify and cultivate new prospective donors; Develops and directs the implementation of regular, ongoing donor communications for both stewardship and cultivation, supporting funder engagement in order to secure long-term funding streams
Drafts annual fundraising work plans in collaboration with the Executive Director
In collaboration with the Executive Director, participates in funder communication including creation of an annual report; maintains good rapport with grant partners

Required Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years demonstrated success in grant proposal writing and securing multiple grants
Exceptional writing skills in English including impeccable written grammar and persuasive writing skills
Able to learn quickly with an exceptional ability to process, understand and successfully assimilate information
Demonstrated fluency in addressing criteria for measuring the impact of grant-funded work; proficiency collecting, organizing and analyzing meaningful program data and evaluation metrics
Excellent project management skills; ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, performance-oriented environment
Able to think strategically and execute projects and convey their impact to various audiences
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work across complex organizations and manage relationships both internally and externally with a diverse population of colleagues and funders.
Highly organized; able to check work-products for accuracy, set priorities and meet objectives and deadlines with limited direction while working remotely,

Preferred Qualifications

Resident of the greater Cleveland area
Experience in a senior development/fundraising role
Supervisory experience
Experience working with an international nonprofit/NGO.
Experience with Salesforce, Box and/or project management software
Familiarity with issues in IEEFA’s field of work (energy, finance, or climate issues)
Experience presenting statistics and data in meaningful ways, such as charts and tables, to internal and external audiences

Bachelor’s degree

Salary

$92,000 - $117,000; Salary commensurate with experience.

Work Schedule: Full time, 40 hours/week. General hours are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, however IEEFA is an international organization working with international funders, so some late evening or early morning work will be required due to time zone differences.

Travel: Some travel is required including quarterly trips to Cleveland (if the employee lives outside of the area). All global team members attend IEEFA’s annual conference and international team retreat.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The Director of Development and Grants may work a hybrid remote/in office schedule.  Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back and neck strain.
