Description
We are seeking a Communications Associate to help produce engaging external communications on behalf of our programs and projects. The primary responsibilities of the Communications Associate will be writing stories about our work and sharing those stories in Virginia Humanities’ owned communications channels, including our websites, social media, and e-newsletters. Other core responsibilities include proofreading, publishing event announcements, interviewing program staff and external partners, and helping to develop content for online videos and our annual print magazine.
The Communications Associate reports to the Director of Communications. As part of the Advancement Team, this position also assists in the production of materials for fundraising and donor stewardship campaigns.
Job Duties
Draft stories, interviews, communications pieces, and press releases for various uses, including but not limited to e-newsletters, print publications, websites, and social media
Edit and proofread external communications to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency with the organization’s voice and official style guide
Publish stories, events, and press releases online using a web content management system
Seek additional ways to increase and diversify the audience for Virginia Humanities editorial content
Edit photos, slideshows, and other visual assets for the website and social media
Conduct research and interview internal and external constituents for stories
Draft, edit, and schedule social media posts in accordance with the organization’s communications plan
Ensure compliance with brand guidelines and visual standards
Special projects as assigned
Skills Required
Qualified candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as English, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or Marketing and a minimum of three years of experience in journalism, communications, social media management, or a related field.
