Job Description

The Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) conservation organization dedicated to restoring the dynamic, diverse, resilient landscapes of the arid and semi-arid west is currently looking for (6) Seasonal Invasive Plant Technicians to join our team.


Primary Responsibilities/ Duties:

  • Technicians will work with an experienced BLM Crew Lead, assisting in inventory and management of invasive plants on public lands. 
  • Inventory duties include correctly identifying invasive plant species and infestations, surveying and mapping found infestations utilizing GPS devices and mapping software, taking photo points, and managing data after returning from the field. 
  • Monitoring duties include utilizing the protocols laid out in the national BLM’s AIM (Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring) program.
  • Invasive Plant Control duties will consist of herbicide application utilizing backpack sprayers and motorized equipment; manual control will consist of hand pulling and utilizing hand tools. 
  • Regular communication with BLM federal Employees
  • Towing trailers with UTVs
  • Occasional truck camping in the backcountry for up to 4 days at a time 
  • Development of knowledge and identification of invasive and noxious plants
  • Ability to follow safety protocols such as:

-Wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided by the BLM (i.e. chemical resistant gloves and protective eyeglasses) when working with chemicals

-Safely operating vehicles (i.e. UTVs and 4x4 federally owned vehicles) and equipment on rough two-track roads

-Wearing helmets, required and provided by the BLM, when operating UTVs

-Providing and wearing closed-toed shoes, long pants, and long sleeve shirts for all field work


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience and/ or education is not required for these entry-level positions; however, applicants must be deemed responsible, willing to learn, and willing to perform physical labor under arduous conditions including long hours, summer heat, difficult terrain, and long drives to remote work sites
  • Must complete and pass the federal BLM background check
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Clean driving record for the past 3 years. 
  • Experience with GPS units, 4WD vehicles, UTVs, and trailer towing is recommended
  • Experience and/ or comfortability with extensive hiking while carrying a 40 lb. backpack sprayer over rough and steep terrain


Salary and Benefits:

  • $18/ hour
  • Housing Stipend: TBD
  • $40/ night per diem when camping


Schedule:

  • The season will start Early May and end in late September or October (weather and funding dependent)
  • 4/10-hour days per work week
  • Overtime is available

About the Area: Elko is in the northeastern corner of Nevada and home to the Ruby Mountains. The area is nestled within the sagebrush steppes surrounded by other mountain ranges that are filled with alpine lakes, hot springs, and old stories of the West, providing great opportunities for hiking, backpacking, climbing, fishing, camping, and other recreational activities. The city of Elko also has a lively downtown area that hosts events throughout the summer including the International Basque Festival, the Ruby Mountain Balloon Festival, the Ruby Mountain Relay, and rodeos.

Through cooperative agreements, grants, contracts, and memberships, ENLC works diligently with its partners to restore these fragile, yet resilient, ecosystems.
